What’s the difference between cast aluminum and cast iron registers?

There are a variety of reasons to choose cast aluminum over cast iron. First, aluminum includes significant weight savings over cast iron. Cast iron grilles can be up to 3 times heavier than aluminum. Large, heavy cast iron return grilles in the ceiling could be considered a hazard. 

Second, aluminum also does not corrode or rust in the way that iron does. This makes cast aluminum a more versatile metal since it can be used in places with high humidity or moisture. 

Third, once powder coated or painted, the two materials are indistinguishable from each other. Typically, because of its lighter color, aluminum is easier to paint as well.
